Abstract

AETHRAKHTHON is an electroacoustic game-piece that integrates an augmented drum kit with a 3D game engine to structure improvisational performance. The drum kit, equipped with sensors and machine listening techniques, functions as both musical instrument and game controller, translating physical gestures into interactive audiovisual outcomes. Set within a navigable game environment, the performer explores levels defined by distinct mappings and rules, enabling varied musical interactions and outcomes through experimentation and trial-and-error. While the game’s structure imposes constraints, it simultaneously allows multiple pathways for performance, creating a dynamic interplay between control and affordance. The system blends acoustic sound, live processing, and synthesis, with visuals projected for shared performer–audience feedback. The work demonstrates how game design can act as a framework for structuring improvisation, positioning gameplay mechanics as a form of musical score.
